HIKING, CAMP CRAFT, & CANOEING
4TH, 5TH, & 6TH GRADES
Join us this spring for an incredible 5-weeks of hiking, camp craft, and canoing on our local trails, mountains, and waterways with a culminating overnight expedition. This program is designed to teach the basics canoeing and camp craft along with introducing participants to local trail systems and outdoor adventure possibilities in addition to the ability to feel confident on an overnight expedition. While no experience is necessary, all ability levels are welcome!
The canoeing portion will focus on paddle strokes, steering, and how to communicate with your paddle partner and progress to more advanced skills such as capsize rescue techniques. In addition, hiking skills will consist of navigation, route-finding, and other trail essentials in addition to camp craft skills such as fire building and setting up a backcountry shelter.
To facilitate a safe and enjoyable overnight expedition, other skill development areas will build upon environmental awareness, leave no trace ethics, back-country cooking, and other essentials important for safety and fun on an overnight in the field.
In addition to learning these technical skills, each session will be framed around team building and individual growth through our four core values and essential question to promote socio-emotional and interpersonal development.
Lastly, one of the sessions will be dedicated to giving back to our community through a service learning initiative partnered with a local organization TBD. To learn more about Sundog service learning, please visit the service learning tab under “About Us“ on our website.
We hope to see you out there!
