Scaling the Icy Heights - Ice Climbing*

7th/8th/9th graders

Travel to new heights during the new year with ice climbing led by Equinox Guiding Service. Hike in from the Old Carriage Road Trail to the Left Cataracts, then put on your harness and helmet and let the ice fly. You’ll learn to swing your axe, place your crampons and hone your belaying and knot tying skills.

This experience is designed for those who have some experience climbing and are looking forward to building their technical and teamwork skills through this new medium. Boots, axes, crampons, harnesses and helmets provided; you supply a willingness to layer up and brave the elements.

This course, which will be taught in the field, will consist of 4 hands-on training sessions (each 4 hours). The program builds the foundation of knowledge and skills that students will need to climb on ice. Equipment, knot tying, belaying, anchors, rappelling, and climbing movements are all covered in detail.

Led by Equinox Guiding Service

Tuition: $200, all equipment included

Session Dates: February 21 through 24, 2022 from 8-12pm.

*Course offering depends on ice conditions. Previous rock climbing experience necessary or approval of guide.

February Break’s Wintery Mix

4th/5th/6th graders

Join MSO guides for four sessions of outdoor adventure during February Break. Flexibility is so crucial for our changing world and the activities will flex based on temperature, snow and conditions in the field. Winter skills might include snow shoeing, ice skating, cross country skiing and/or ice fishing. The schedule will be determined at the beginning of the week and all equipment will be supplied.

Guides are well-versed in winter ecology, birding and animal tracking and will share their knowledge daily as well as teach skills necessary for winter survival, shelter building and fire-making.

All of the above will be infused with team building initiatives, trust activities, group games and reflection. Small group sizes allow for great group bonding.

Guided by Maine Sport Outfitters

Tuition: $190, all equipment included and scholarships available

Session Dates: February 21 through 24 from 9:00am-1:00pm
