WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA! (7th &8th grade)

6 weeks of Rock Climbing, a service experience, and a multi-day expedition. Coastal Maine is a well known destination in New England for rock climbing. Climbers from around the East Coast flock to Camden, Acadia and nearby areas to experience the accessible climbing that Maine has to offer. Explore the local mountains with your SunDog team and learn how to rock climb with certified climbing guides. Learn the local hot spots while building skills and confidence.

Rock climbing is an amazing way to experience our natural landscape in Midcoast Maine but must be done safely and responsibly. The course, which will be taught in the field, will consist of 12 hands-on training sessions to ensure a safe, friendly and fun way to experience rock climbing.

This program starts to build the foundation of knowledge and skills that students will need to climb outdoors in a top rope setting. Equipment, belaying, anchors, rappelling, and climbing movement are all covered in detail. Build up to a special expedition and test your skills.

PATH OF THE PADDLE (5th & 6th grade)

6 weeks of STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDING (SUP!) & CANOEING, plus a service experience, and a multi-day expedition. Travel by canoe is in Maine’s DNA. Starting with the Abenaki, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes through to the present day, paddling in Maine’s rivers and lakes areas has been a source of commerce, sustenance and recreation for over 10,000 years. This 6-week course is designed to teach the basics of paddling, whether it be on a paddle board or in a canoe.

The Paddling essentials course consists of 12 hands on training sessions (2 per week) taught in the field that will prepare each student with technical skills, preparedness and basic knowledge of SUP and Canoeing. The training sessions will start with foundational skills such as paddle strokes, steering and how to communicate with your paddle partner and progress to more advanced skills such as capsize rescue techniques and portaging (carrying) canoes. To facilitate a safe and enjoyable expedition, other skill development areas will build upon environmental awareness, leave no trace ethics, ecology, route navigation, back-country cooking and other essentials important for safety and fun on a multi-day expedition.
